about

In these uncertain times, it is especially inspiring and soothing to hear from Hildegard of Bingen, a mystic nun who lived in the Middle Ages. She was an accomplished author, visionary, healer, artist, composer, gemologist, and herbalist.

Her wisdom offers a lens through which to heal our relationships with one another, with the earth and with the Divine. May this reading bring you hope and reassurance.

Beautiful music from Pond 5 by Lexin Music.

lyrics

I invite you now into the beautiful and powerful wisdom of, Hildegard of Bingen a medieval nun who continues to bless us with her mystical visions, captivating sacred music and writings, her gifts as a healer, gemologist, herbalist, and artist. Her visionary images have been likened to mandalas, representing the cosmos.

This reading offers a sample of her wisdom which continues to be incredibly relevant to the times in which we live.

Here is her description of her visions:
These visions which I saw were not in sleep nor in dreams, nor in my imagination nor by bodily eyes or outward ears nor in a hidden place; but in watching, aware with the pure eyes of the mind and inner ear of the heart.”

Heaven was opened and a fiery light of exceeding brilliance came and permeated my whole brain, and inflamed my whole heart and whole breast, not like a burning but like a warming flame, as the sun warms anything its rays touch.

Even in a world that's being shipwrecked, remain brave and strong.

We shall awaken from our dullness and rise vigorously toward justice. If we fall in love with creation deeper and deeper, we will respond to its endangerment with passion.

We cannot live in a world that is not our own, in a world that is interpreted for us by others. An interpreted world is not a home. Part of the terror is to take back our own listening, to use our own voice, to see our own light.

The earth which sustains humanity must not be injured. It must not be destroyed!

Humanity, take a good look at yourself. Inside, you’ve got heaven and earth, and all of creation. You’re a world—everything is hidden in you.”

Humanity finds itself in the midst of the world. In the midst of all other creatures humanity is the most significant and yet the most dependent upon the others.

Glance at the sun. See the moon and stars. Gaze at the beauty of the green earth.

O, You who are ever giving life to all life, moving all creatures, root of all things, washing them clean, wiping out their mistakes, healing their wounds, You are our true life, luminous, wonderful, awakening the heart from its ancient sleep.

I, the fiery life of divine wisdom, I ignite the beauty of the plains, I sparkle the water, I burn in the sun, and the moon, and the stars.

Rivers of living water are to be poured out over the whole world, to ensure that people, like fishes caught in a net, can be restored to wholeness.

Love is in the wheel of eternity outside of time,15 just as heat is in fire,

Love abounds in all things, excels from the depths to beyond the stars, is lovingly disposed to all things.

Like billowing clouds, Like the incessant gurgle of the brook The longing of the spirit can never be stilled.

Everything that is in the heavens, on earth, and under the earth is penetrated with connectedness, penetrated with relatedness.

The earth is at the same time mother, She is mother of all that is natural, mother of all that is human. She is mother of all, for contained in her are the seeds of all. The earth of humankind contains all moistness, all verdancy, all germinating power. It is in so many ways fruitful. All creation comes from it.

Divinity is like a wheel, a circle, a whole, that can neither be understood, nor divided, nor begun nor ended.

The mystery of God hugs you in its all-encompassing arms.

The soul is a breath of living spirit, that with excellent sensitivity, permeates the entire body to give it life. Just so, the breath of the air makes the earth fruitful. Thus the air is the soul of the earth, moistening it, greening it.

The song of rejoicing softens hard hearts. It makes tears of godly sorrow flow from them. Singing summons the Holy Spirit. Happy praises offered in simplicity and love lead the faithful to complete harmony, without discord. Don't stop singing.” “The word stands for the body, but the symphony stands for the spirit.

Holy Spirit, the life that gives life: You are the cause of all movement. You are the breath of all creatures. You are the salve that purifies our souls. You are the ointment that heals our wounds. You are the fire that warms our hearts. You are the light that guides our feet. ,O fiery love, O clearest fountain, gather the estranged and seek again the lost.
